Powered by Natural Gas: Studying Technologies and Issues Around The Expanded Use Of Natural Gas Fuel In Energy Operations
Natural gas is displacing diesel fuel in reciprocating engines and firing turbines providing power for oil and gas operations. Together with our partners in industry and academia, the Environmentally Friendly Drilling Systems Program is exploring engine technologies, fueling systems, industry trends and regulatory issues as part of the PbNG initiative. Technologies that will advance dual-fuel diesels, improve dedicated gas engines, and deliver turbine-electric power are being configured and deployed in new ways to make natural gas the fuel of choice for exploration and production. EFD research focuses on the challenges and benefits of using natural gas fuel, including understanding emissions and fuel cost savings associated with natural gas through field measurement and modeling.
